Julio Enciso x Glorious

The Joy in La Joya

I've covered Julio Enciso's future at Brighton here, so this post will simply serve as a way to outline my thinking behind this video (above)—a director's notes, if you will:

0:00 - 0:10

Well, we all know Enciso’s had a slightly difficult year. I think Mac Allister’s words provide a good, positive platform to build on.

“Putting the joy back in La Joya” — self-explanatory.

0:17 - 0:26

I like how the video’s slowed down—classical, almost—as it matches the speed of the audio. I also edited it so the frame cuts to black right as the ball hits the net, making it feel less like an otherwise harsh cut.

0:32 - 0:39

Here, the audio speeds up, so the clips do too—shorter clips, faster cuts, in tune with the dribbling.

I heard you die twice, once when they bury you in the grave
And the second time is the last time that somebody mentions your name

While I don’t explicitly highlight this part of the song, I really like this lyric. I suppose it’s somewhat symbolic of Enciso’s situation—a question of WILL people remember his name?

A call to action, of sorts.

0:43 - 0:47

Did I look out for the people or did I do it all for fame?

Enciso’s been called selfish, so I find this lyric nicely nuanced. It works on many levels and ultimately speaks to the “dilemma” he faces in the public eye—which way will his career go?

0:47 - 0:51

…searching for euphoria

The word “euphoria” blends into a clip of Enciso dancing, or, in other words, showing pure euphoria.

0:53 - 0:59

Enciso clearly looks overwhelmed with happiness in this part of the clip as he searches for a camera, which I find quite wholesome.

My mama told me never bow your head, woo!

The last few words of this lyric—never bow your head—flashing onscreen as Enciso looks away from the camera, with the “woo!” mirroring the frame cut, feel nicely poetic too.

1:00/1:13

Enciso shoots the ball just as the song goes “glorious” (which then pops onscreen).

At 1:13, it’s the same idea, but with the start of a new lyric:

I made it through the darkest part of the night

...which, I hope, is what Enciso can achieve.

1:20

Enciso starts his celebration, looking up to the sky in sync with “glorious.”

1:26 - 1:37

Some really good camerawork in there—what with the kind of stable chaos. I also cut and spliced the ending of the clips so that Enciso’s celebration with the rest of the players (Colwill) is shown from multiple angles.
